(Manchester, NH) —Today, July 16, 2008, former Governor and current candidate for U.S. Senate Jeanne Shaheen visited the Parrott Avenue Place Senior Citizen Center to meet with seniors and discuss the recent attempts in Washington to cut Medicare access for 200,000 New Hampshire seniors.
"Yesterday, I was glad to see the Senate override George Bush's veto of a bill to protect Medicare access for 200,000 NH seniors, veterans and individuals with disabilities," Shaheen said. "The bill had tremendous bi-partisan support, yet President Bush and his allies in Congress – which, disappointingly, include John Sununu, who voted against the bill three times – chose to stand for insurance company profits instead of standing with seniors. When Washington is choosing insurance company profits over health care for New Hampshire families, something has got to change and it's got to change now. I believe we should be working to make health care more affordable and more accessible for New Hampshire families.
"In the Senate, I will work to lower health care costs by increasing efficiency in the system and improving chronic disease management. We need a health care system that incentivizes wellness, not illness. And I will help bring down prescription drug costs for seniors by fighting to allow Medicare to negotiate for the lowest price possible on prescription drugs.
"It is time we had a Senator in Washington who stands up for our seniors, not for insurance companies. In the US Senate, you can count on me to stand up for seniors."
