PLANNED PARENTHOOD ENDORSEMENT. Throughout her political career, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen has supported – and has been supported by – Planned Parenthood, and her current run for a third term on Capitol Hill is no exception.

WMUR has learned Planned Parenthood Action Fund — the political arm of the progressive women’s advocacy group — will endorse Shaheen’s reelection bid later Thursday. It’s by no means a surprise, but it’s still a significant force for Shaheen to have in her corner as she prepares for what is projected to be a tough reelection battle.

“There is no greater champion for New Hampshire women and reproductive rights than Sen. Shaheen, who has always fought to make a difference for women in the Granite State,” said Alexis McGill Johnson, acting president of the action fund.

“At a time when Republican leadership in New Hampshire and across the country are determined to place restrictions on a woman’s access to a full range of health services, we are proud to support Sen. Shaheen, a lifelong advocate for New Hampshire women.”

Shaheen authored and successfully advocated passage of an amendment to provide women in the military who are victims of rape or incest health insurance coverage for abortion. And as the only woman member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, she has sponsored legislation to repeal the so-called “Global Gag Rule,” an executive order banning federal funds for foreign nongovernmental organizations that provide abortion or information about abortion.

Planned Parenthood Votes, the organization’s super PAC, on Wednesday announced the launch of its largest-ever campaign to back candidates in local, state and federal races who support abortion rights. It said it plans to spend at least $45 million nationally during the 2020 campaign.

New Hampshire is included among nine key states to be targeted by the super PAC with digital, television and radio ads as well as direct mail and door-to-door canvassing.

“Next November, our very rights and freedoms will be on the ballot,” said Kelley Robinson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes. “Already, we’ve seen Trump and his buddies in Congress and state legislatures do everything they can to strip us of our rights and access to health care. Who we elect will determine our access to birth control, cancer screenings, sex education, abortion access and more.

“To all the politicians working to take away our rights and undermine access to health care, you’ve been warned. We have steadily been building our power over the last decade and we are ready to set the table on our terms. We are fired up, we are engaged, and we are going to win.”
